Gastroesophageal reflux disease (the name is often abbreviated as GEAS) is a functional disease characterized by a combination of typical symptoms:
- heartburn (retrosternal heartburn)
- acid or alkaline belching
- belching due to posture (lying on your back)
- burps during the night
- convulsions
- painless swallowing disorder (dysphagia)
- irritating cough
- cough at night
- dysphonia (hoarseness, aphonia)
These symptoms may or may not be associated with erosive, inflammatory lesions of the esophageal mucosa. A poor diet or a stressful lifestyle can significantly affect the production of gastric juice, the increase of stomach acid and the formation of an irritating and painful burning sensation, especially after a meal.
This excess acidity can also be felt at the entrance to the stomach with burning, cramping, bloating and nausea. GEAS can also occur during sleep, as lying down allows stomach juices to flow into the esophagus. Because the walls of the esophagus are not suitable for stomach acid, it causes a burning sensation in the chest.
