Kreon is used in children and adults with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. This is when the pancreas cannot produce the quantity of the enzymes required for digestion.

Kreon should be taken during a meal or snacking with a sufficient quantity of liquid. If necessary, you may open the capsule, mix the granules into a sour fruit purée or yoghurt, and eat the mix immediately.

Kreon minimicrospheres (small granules) contain a composition of enzymes called pancreatin. It is necessary for the process of digestion. The enzymes help break down food into nutrients that are easily absorbed in the intestines.

When the Kreon capsule gets to the stomach, its coating dissolves to release the minimicrospheres which contain the pancreatic enzymes. Since pancreatic enzymes are sensitive to gastric acid, the minimicrospheres are coated with a special protective layer, so that they do not start the process of dissolving in the stomach.
