The active ingredient in Bepanten ointment is dexpanthenol, which is contained in an oil emulsion that is easily absorbed by the skin. In skin cells, dexpanthenol is quickly converted into pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid is involved in both skin formation and regeneration. Bepanthen ointment is used for:
• the treatment of minor burns and scratches, skin inflammation (caused, for example, by radiation therapy, phototherapy, or ultraviolet radiation), chronic ulcers and pressure ulcers, skin tears around the anus, to accelerate the healing and epithelialization of skin grafts,
• the treatment and prevention of abrasions and cracks in the skin,
• dry skin care,
• regular breast care and the treatment of cracked nipples in nursing mothers,
• in infant care as a protective layer against diaper moisture and the treatment of irritated, reddened skin and diaper rash,
• as an adjunct to corticosteroid therapy for patients, as well as during breaks in corticosteroid use.
