Maalox is an antacid that relieves symptoms of high stomach acid. Maalox protects the lining of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. Heartburn and esophageal reflux can be caused by changes in diet (acidic or spicy foods, alcohol, etc.) or certain medications (aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, etc.). To reduce the likelihood of symptoms, follow these guidelines as closely as possible: Avoid eating a lot of fatty foods with your meals.
