Potassium iodide is used after nuclear accidents or nuclear reactor accidents to prevent the absorption of radioactive iodine into the thyroid gland. Radioactive iodine isotope release is possible following nuclear reactor accidents. In case of contamination, radioactive iodine is taken up by the thyroid gland. To prevent the body from absorbing radioactive iodine, non-radioactive iodine (such as potassium iodide) must be taken in before or during a nuclear accident.
